Detox, short for detoxification, is a word which has crept into our vocabulary more and more over the last decade, and is now being used in context of many health and beauty products. In terms of nutrition, detox refers to a modernised form of fasting.
Everything we eat and drink is broken down by our bodies into what are essentially chemical building blocks, some good, some bad and everything dependent on quantity. The idea behind detox is to give our bodies a chance to re-balance itself and to support this process by consuming specific liquids and nutrients.
At Magic Mountain Retreat in Ibiza the Detox course is a week long programme, which consists of three cleansing days followed by four build-up days. On the first day of cleansing the nutrient intake is purely based on fluids, but already on day two there is a combination of liquids, fruit and raw vegetables, leading to a similar final cleansing day.
By this time your body will already have made full use of its reprieve from the normal daily demands our food consumption makes on it and will have cleansed the digestive system. The build-up days which follow are designed to re-accustom the body to normal eating and to make the most of the health benefits gained by the three cleansing days. Therefore, the build-up days incorporate many foods which for example are anti-oxidants or have other health benefits.
