The GI Diet is based on choosing your food according to its glycaemic index, and it is the most effective long-term approach to a healthy balanced diet.
The Science
The glycaemic index (GI) was designed by scientists to rate foods according to how quickly they are broken down into glucose and absorbed into the blood stream, hence glucose itself has a GI of 100. High GI foods (number 70 and above) trigger a large release of the hormone insulin into the blood stream as they cause glucose levels in the blood to rise quickly. Insulin is responsible for removing excess glucose and returning the blood-sugar levels to normal. However, the insulin causes glucose to be converted into fat and too much insulin also triggers the hunger urges we often feel after the 'sugar rush' is over. Therefore not a good cycle for our bodies to get into.
Low GI foods (numbers 55 and below) have the opposite effect. They are digested by our bodies at a much slower rate and thereby only cause a low level blood-sugar increase which only requires small amounts of insulin to be released by the pancreas. Because of this low GI foods leave us feeling full for longer and are less 'stressful' for our bodies, this helps to reduce the risks of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. By eating a diet of low and medium GI Foods the body is also encouraged to burn energy reserves rather than building them, which results in weight loss.
What surprises most people who try the GI Diet is how much food you are allowed to eat; you change your style of eating but you don't starve. In fact you have three healthy meals and three snacks every day. This is not a diet you force yourself to endure for two weeks only to regain the weight once you revert to your normal diet, but a way of eating which you can easily integrate into your daily life to keep loosing, or maintain your weight, once back home.
